This training will introduce participants to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding System (MITI), version 3.0. Using lecture, audiotape and group practice, participants will learn to recognize and categorize common elements of therapist competence in Motivational Interviewing. Participants for this workshop should have experience in Motivational Interviewing and a desire to learn the MITI for supervisory or research purposes. This course will include large group exercises in the morning, and individual or small group coding practice in the afternoon of each workshop day. Participants will recieve feedback based on coded interview segments and will be ready to use this coding system by the end of this workshop, including new revisions to the Global Rating Scales.

This workshop will also provide an introduction to methods for utilizing the MITI to provide feedback and coach or supervise others in the MI practice.

Participants for the workshop will be required to bring two (2) audio taped interviews or client sessions with them to the MITI training, to provide materials for coding exercises. Please bring the equipment needed to listen to them, as well. More information will be provided to training participants closer to the event.

Learning Objectives: Upon completing this workshop, the participant will be able to:

1. Evaluate clinicians using verbal anchors for five critical dimensions of Motivational Interviewing: Evocation, Collaboration, Autonomy Support, Direction, & Empathy.
2. Assign behavior codes for five clinician behaviors integral to Motivational Interviewing.
3. Code other clinicians’ work to practice their MITI coding skills.
4. Code an example of their work for future use of MITI.
5. Learn how to give feedback in supervision and provide coaching using the MITI.
